Physical Activity for Children with Autism
Tuesday Tip – Swimming
Swimming is a sport that offers competition on an individual basis,
making it ideal therapy for children with Autism Spectrum
Disorders. They can thrive on the exercise, competition and social

Swimming is an excellent activity to promote social interaction and boost self-esteem. My daughter was diagnosed ADD/ADHD in kindergarten. We had difficulty finding an activity that she enjoyed. Then we found the swim team! She could participate in individual events or relays (group participation). Rather than beat others in individual events, I encouraged her to beat her time the last time she swam in that same event. Check your local parks and recreation or colleges. Our coaches were college students getting summer hours. It was great!
